Thresholds demarcate meaning; borders define countries, birth and death define a lifetime, skin and bones define a body, a silhouette against the horizon defines a mountain. Liminal transitions- between zones of meaning, between constructs- can be frightening places. These transitions require us to enter areas where our minds are at a loss, where our concepts fail, where our definitions are useless. Between worlds, between empires, between lives- there is no way to predict how, or where, a new threshold might be crossed.
Our culture approaches a threshold, and this is my dream for our crossing. The dream of the Earth, the dream of a woman from rural Indiana, the dream of an oppressed society, the dream of their oppressors- some dreams ought to be abandoned, some ought to be protected, and some ought to be shared.
